Agbonlahor can’t believe Brendan Rodgers blunder at Leicester with manager announcement imminent
Gabby Agbonlahor has suggested Leicester City may have made a mistake by sacking experienced boss Brendan Rodgers.
The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, pointed to the lack of quality managers ready to come into the Foxes’ hot seat as they prepare to announce Rodgers’ successor.
Leicester announced on Monday night the appointment of former Aston Villa and Norwich boss Dean Smith on a short-term deal after sacking Brendan Rodgers.
This comes after negotiations broke down with ex-Leeds manager Jesse Marsch – while Rafa Benitez was also contacted about the role.
Leicester are 19th in the Premier League and two points from safety after losing 1-0 at home against Bournemouth under caretaker boss Adam Sadler on Saturday (8 April).
A number of senior stars are expected to depart the King Power Stadium in the summer window regardless of a potential relegation – including captain James Maddison and out-of-contract Youri Tielemans.
Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “If you look at the recent performances, they’re on a real downward trajectory.
“Sometimes a manager leaving can make a big difference, but I think they’ll go down. They’re in a real dogfight.
“They need four wins, and I just don’t see where they are coming from.
“The problem is that there’s not enough quality in the market, waiting to come in.

“At the end of the season, only time will tell whether they were right to sack Rodgers.
“But, wow, I just feel that it might have been a mistake when you look at who they were lining up. The potential replacements, Marsch and Smith – it’s not a really exciting prospect for Leicester.”
