Agbonlahor can’t believe Liverpool could finalise Mason Mount deal amid £80,000-a-week reveal

Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Liverpool should steer clear of signing Chelsea contract rebel Mason Mount in the summer window as part of their midfield rebuild.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 24-year-old is “too inconsistent” to make a tangible impact on the Merseysiders’ midfield.

Sources told this site last week (15 February) that Mount is demanding parity with top-earning Chelsea stars amid a “deadlock” in contract renewal talks.

Liverpool

Liverpool are one of a number of clubs interested in a move for the England international should he become available this summer.

Mount, who has managed three goals and two assists in 22 Premier League appearances as a regular starter this season, has less than 18 months remaining on his current Chelsea deal.

Liverpool are plotting a midfield rebuild this season following an underwhelming season which leaves them eighth in the league and 5-2 down against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I don’t see Mason Mount pulling up any trees at Liverpool.

“They need better quality.

“Mount has got high energy, he can score a goal, he’s technically good – but he’s just too inconsistent.

“I feel like Liverpool and Chelsea need more consistency. They need people who can make things happen week in, week out.

“I don’t see Mount as the answer to any of Liverpool’s problems at the moment.”

Liverpool

The England international currently earns a reported wage of £80,000-a-week after last extending his contract in 2019.

Liverpool are set to lose Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain when their contracts expire in June.
