Agbonlahor can’t believe Man United could now beat Man City to Benjamin Pavard deal

Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Man United should steer clear of adding another right-back to their ranks this summer amid links to Bayern Munich’s Benjamin Pavard.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Red Devils must instead add depth at centre-back, central midfield and in attack or risk being “embarrassed” in the Champions League.

According to Sky Sport Germany (14 July), Man City want Pavard to join the club this summer – but still face competition from rivals Man United, as well as Juventus.

Football Insider revealed back in April details of the Red Devils’ interest in Pavard – as well as Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong.

However, Man United already have Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the books at Old Trafford – with both players staking their claim for a long-term role under Erik ten Hag in the 2022-23 campaign.

Dalot’s contract runs until June 2028 after an extension earlier this year, while Wan-Bissaka’s deal runs until June 2024.

When asked if right-back should be a priority for Man United, Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “No, there’s no need to bring anyone else in now.

“Wan-Bissaka showed in the last 10-15 games of last season that he’s going to fight hard for his position.

“No one gets past him. He’s a nightmare to play against. If I was still playing, I’d be dreading coming up against him.

“I wouldn’t look at anyone else if I was United.

“I think they need to spend the money on another centre-half, a central midfielder and maybe even two strikers.

“They need more firepower and more competition. They’re in the Champions League now, the big-boy competition.

“If they don’t have the right squad, they could get embarrassed.”
