Agbonlahor can’t believe Newcastle United could seal Hakim Ziyech deal as triple swoop reported

Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Newcastle United should “aim higher” than Chelsea star Hakim Ziyech as they look for reinforcements in the January window.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 29-year-old Morocco international “hasn’t done it since coming to the Premier League” three years ago.

According to The Telegraph (16 January), Newcastle are plotting a move for Ziyech this month as Chelsea look to offload a number of fringe stars.

The report claims the Magpies are also lining up moves for Conor Gallagher and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Newcastle sit third in the Premier League, seven places and 10 points above Chelsea – who are struggling for form under new boss Graham Potter.

Ziyech has notched just 14 goals and 11 assists in 97 games since joining the Stamford Bridge club for a reported £33.3million in 2020.

When asked if he would be an upgrade for Newcastle, Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “Not one bit.

“I don’t understand why Newcastle would be interested in players who can’t get a game for Chelsea.

“It doesn’t make sense. They’re above them, they’ve got top four aspirations.

“Why would you go and buy Ziyech? He hasn’t done it since coming to the Premier League.

“Why would you fill your squad with those type of players?

“I think they should be aiming higher.

“Would Ziyech be happy to sit on the bench? He doesn’t get into that side right now.”
