Agbonlahor ‘feels sorry’ for Man United fans after takeover bombshell

Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted he “feels sorry” for Man United fans with a leading supporter group claiming it could be another 18 months before a takeover of the club is finalised.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, cited the club’s Old Trafford stadium and training base as areas where England’s second-most successful club are falling behind rivals Man City.

As per the BBC (27 July), the 1958 Group have warned it could be “18 months” before a takeover of Man United by leading contenders Sheikh Jassim or Sir Jim Radcliffe is finalised.

Meanwhile, inews has claimed (1 August) that the takeover process has been “paused”.

Man United won the League Cup last season to end a six-year trophy drought – but rivals Man City won the treble to press home their current advantage over their neighbours.

Old Trafford has missed out as a potential host for the Euro 2028 tournament – with former United captain Gary Neville blasting the Glazer Family’s “shameful” lack of investment in the venue as the reason for the snub.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I do feel sorry for the Man United fans.

“They’re looking at other clubs who are in such great condition.

“My club, Aston Villa, are in a great position with owners, fans and players all at one with each other.

“I think everyone is sick and tired of hearing about the Glazers. We don’t want to hear that anymore – but you can see the frustrations.

“Old Trafford, for example, should be the best stadium in the country. The training ground should have been revamped – and that could have been happening this summer.

“They’re tired of being underdogs to Man City, and the right owners would bring them back level with City.

“I can understand the frustration. The Glazers are doing what they want. No one can force them to sell.”
