Agbonlahor hits back after Ollie Watkins reveal at Aston Villa

Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Ollie Watkins does not deserve the criticism he is getting from Aston Villa fans.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer claimed Watkins is “sharp” and has full faith the goals will come.

The 26-year-old has started seven of Aston Villa’s eight Premier League games this season but has only found the net once.

Steven Gerrard told Sky Sports, as relayed by Birmingham Live on Saturday (8 October), that his performances have been “really strong”.

“People get carried away with criticism sometimes,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“If you looked at the Leeds game properly, Watkins looked sharp. Yes, maybe some of the chances that he, Coutinho and some other players had they could have done better.

“They are making the keeper work, they are trying to score.

“For me, the goals will come. Coutinho had one off the post, Watkins had one where he runs free twice and maybe he could have done better.

“With the game plan and how Villa played, it was a promising performance. On another day, you have games where it just won’t go in and on another day, those chances go in and we win 4-0. Look at the Southampton game last season where every chance went in.

“It’s frustrating for Villa, of course, and the fans but at least they are making the chances.”

Watkins moved to Aston Villa from Brentford in the summer of 2020.

The seven-cap England international has 28 goals and nine assists in 85 games across all competitions from the Midlands giants.

In other news, Aston Villa have a “Callum Wilson in their ranks” as an “amazing” claim is issued.
