Agbonlahor in ‘no doubt’ about James Ward-Prowse joining Newcastle after Staveley promise
Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted James Ward-Prowse joining Newcastle is an “exciting” prospect even if he is not good enough to take the club to the “very top”.
The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested that the Magpies are still in a building process and cannot yet go into the market for “superstars”.
Sources told this site on Thursday (9 March) that Newcastle are ready to battle Premier League rivals for Ward-Prowse, 28, in the summer window.
It is believed that Southampton will find it difficult to keep hold of their captain if they suffer relegation to the Championship this season.
Football Insider revealed last month (13 February) that Newcastle have set aside huge funds to sign a box-office partner for star man Bruno Guimaraes this summer.
Speaking to talkSPORT last month (27 February), Magpies co-owner Amanda Staveley revealed her ambition to transform the club into one of Europe’s elite sides – vowing to win the Champions League.
Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “He’d improve that Newcastle squad, there’s no doubt about it.
“But I don’t think he can get them to the very top.
“It’s a process at the moment for Newcastle. They know that they can’t go out and get the superstars.
“Ward-Prowse would help them, that’s for sure. With him and Guimaraes, just think about the service they could provide.

“It’s exciting to think about.
“I think the other priorities should be attacking options. The goals have dried up for them, so they need more clinical players in that front three.”
