Agbonlahor issues David Moyes sack verdict with West Ham ‘talking behind the scenes’

Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed David Moyes has earned the right to lead West Ham into the 2023-24 campaign despite a dismal season.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Irons should be talking to another manager this summer about the possibility of joining the club in October – if Moyes, 60, cannot restore them to the top ten.

West Ham missed the chance to all but secure their Premier League survival – losing 4-3 away at Crystal Palace on Saturday (29 April).

The Irons are five points clear of the drop zone with five games left to play – and face a two-legged Europa Conference League semi-final against AZ Alkmaar later this month.

Moyes, who has been under sack pressure throughout the 2022-23 campaign, has just over one year remaining on his contract at the London Stadium.

Graham Potter and Brendan Rodgers are among the most successful managers on the market ahead of the off-season.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “It’s going to be a difficult decision.

“West Ham have sacked Moyes before, and gone for a different manager in Pellegrini – and it didn’t work.

“They’ve ended up going back to someone like Moyes.

“Their recent form has been good, they’ve got a chance of winning a European trophy – I would keep Moyes.

“But, I’d be talking to another option behind the scenes. If West Ham get to October and they’re not in the top ten – then you make the change.

“I think Moyes deserves the chance to start next season.”
