Agbonlahor issues emphatic Cameron Archer transfer claim after Aston Villa reveal

Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Aston Villa to keep hold of Cameron Archer this summer and hand him a role for the 2022-23 season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer claimed Steven Gerrard will decide Archer’s future over pre-season.

The 20-year-old is a wanted man after scoring seven goals in 20 games on loan at Preston North End in the second half of the 2021-22 season and scoring four times in four games for England Under-21s in the recent international break.

TalkSPORT journalist Alex Crook reported last week (10 June) that Rangers, Middlesborough and Watford all want to take the young striker on loan ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

“I think he has a role [at Aston Villa],” Agbonlahor told Football Insider

“He’s showing sharp form, he’s broken his way into the first team.

“I think Brad Young was ahead of him in the Under-23s and he’s gone past him.

“Gerrard will want to keep him around but if he goes and gets another striker then he might let him go on loan again.

“At his age, 20, he needs to be playing football. Not coming on for 10 minutes here and there and playing in the Carabao Cup. He needs to be starting.

“I’m sure he’ll try and impress in pre-season as much as he can and see if the manager wants to keep him around or send him out on loan.

“I’d keep him around, he’s a talented striker with very good movement and he gets in good positions.

“I don’t think they will let him go until they are ready.”
