Agbonlahor issues emphatic Trent Alexander-Arnold claim as ‘unstoppable’ Liverpool footage emerges

Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Liverpool cannot blame Trent Alexander-Arnold for their 1-0 defeat to Real Madrid in Saturday’s (28 May) Champions League final.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacked claimed Alexander-Arnold had Vinicius junior in his “pocket all game” and it was almost impossible to defend Federico Valverde’s cross the game’s only goal.

Valverde fired in a low cross that fell to Viniciur junior who had crept behind Alexander-Arnold and poke it past Alisson Becker.

The 23-year-old has come under criticism for his defensive ability but Agbonlahor has insisted he was not at fault at the Stade de France.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “The Real Madrid goal was a nice counter-attack.

“Yes, Valverde has put a shot-cross in and it was a bit of luck really. No defender could have stopped that with the pace it was going at and then Vinicius just taps it in.

“There can’t be any blame on Alexander-Arnold. He had Vinicius in his pocket all game, he defended really well against him.

“[Ibrahima] Konate was a good choice alongside him because he helped cover.

“Yes, he could have looked behind him to see Vinicius was there and dropped but he probably thought Valverde couldn’t cross a ball at that speed.

“Trent could have done better than that but I don’t think you can blame him for Liverpool not winning.”

Alexander-Arnold played 47 times across all competitions in the 2021-22 season as Liverpool won both domestic trophies.

The England international signed a new deal with the Reds last summer (2021) and is under contract until the summer of 2025.
