Agbonlahor issues three-word verdict on Aston Villa sacking Johan Lange after source’s reveal

Johan Lange’s job at Aston Villa should “not at all” be coming under pressure, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer claimed “90 per cent” of the transfer business done in Lange’s time as sporting director has been “very good”.

Sources told Football Insider earlier this week (19 December) that the 43-year-old is fighting for his job.

It is understood that owners Naseef Sawiris and Wes Edens are assessing Lange’s future ahead of the new year and will then make a decision on his long-term future.

The Dane has been in position since July 2020 and was tasked with overhauling the squad after they narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League in the 2019-20 season.

Lange has been responsible for Philippe Coutinho, Diego Carlos, Lucas Digne, Leander Dendocker, Leon Bailey, Emiliano Buendia, Danny Ings, Bertrand Traore, Morgan Sanson and Matty Cash all arriving at Villa Park for substantial transfer fees.

Asked whether he thought the sporting director’s job should be under pressure, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Not at all.

“90 per cent of those signings have been very good so I don’t see him coming under pressure.

“Aston Villa, for me, have a squad of players there who are ready to get into the top eight.

“They just need a little bit of tinkering and I’m sure Unai Emery can get them there.”

Aston Villa

Aston Villa are now 12th in the Premier League table after registering back-to-back wins under Emery prior to the break.

They return to top-flight action on Boxing Day when they host Liverpool at Villa Park.

In other news, Aston Villa have made a move to sign a forward Emery knows very well.
