Agbonlahor issues verdict on Aston Villa selling Tyrone Mings after confirmed news

Aston Villa will not look to sell any of their centre-backs despite signing Diego Carlos from Sevilla, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer claimed next season’s schedule will be “crazy” and Steven Gerrard is building a squad capable of coping with the demands.

The club confirmed last week (26 May) that they had agreed an undisclosed fee with Sevilla for the 29-year-old Brazilian centre-back.

Villa now have five senior centre-backs – Carlos, Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, Callum Chambers and Kortney Hause – while another summer signing, Boubacar Kamara, can also operate at the heart of the defence.

“I think he’s a top player and he’s experienced at 29 as well,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“That experience is going to help him in that backline.

“Konsa’s going to be out for a while with injury but Steven Gerrard’s always said he wants to bring in an experienced centre-half as well. This shows him doing that.

“He’s not looking for youth, he’s looking for experience in that backline.

“I think Carlos and Mings would be a strong partnership, they are both very physical.

“Gerrard wants to get his business done early and add to the squad and that’s what he’s done.

“Even though he’s brought in two players I don’t see him letting player just leave. Next season is going to be a crazy season with a World Cup in the middle of it and you’re allowed five subs next season.

“Clubs are going to build squads for next season. I think he’ll keep five centre-halves next season.”
