Agbonlahor: Leeds United backed to sign Patrick Bamford ally after confirmed news

Leeds United will buy another striker to compliment Joe Gelhardt and Rodrigo because they cannot rely on Patrick Bamford, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker delivered his verdict after Bamford’s latest injury setback.

Leeds confirmed on Sunday (4 December) that the 30-year-old had undergone “minor” groin surgery in Germany but was expected back within two weeks.

He had not travelled his teammates for their mid-season training camp in Spain and will instead continue his recovery away from the group.

The Whites have not been able to rely on the one-time England international since he suffered an ankle injury in September 2021.

He has only started six Premier League games since then and is yet to complete 90 minutes after suffering from various injuries including a hamstring and foot problem.

In the 2020-21 season, the striker scored 17 top flight goals and earned an England call-up as Leeds finished ninth.

“In January they are going to have to bring in a striker,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“They can’t afford to rely on Rodrigo and Gelhardt, they need to bring in one more just in case.

“It’s a shame about Bamford but they are just going to have to get someone else.”

Rodrigo, 31, is the club’s top goalscorer this season after scoring nine goals in 13 Premier League games before the break for the World Cup.

Gelhardt, 20, has been used more sparingly by Jesse Marsch and has only made one start in 11 top flight appearances this term.

In other news, Leeds United are plotting a move to re-sign a £100,000-a-week star in January.
