Agbonlahor: Liverpool exposed after Harvey Elliott decision

Fabio Carvalho and Harvey Elliott cannot play together in the Liverpool midfield, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker insisted the pair are “top, top talents” but leave Liverpool too “open”.

The pair started together for the first time as the Reds were held to a 0-0 draw by Everton last weekend (3 September).

Carvalho, 20, then missed the 4-1 defeat to Napoli in the Champions League in midweek (7 September) with injury while Elliott, 19, retained his place in the side.

The pair came through the Fulham academy together and Carvalho made the move to Anfield this summer after Elliott made the switch three years ago.

“I wasn’t impressed with Liverpool,” Agbonlahor said of the Merseyside derby to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Mo Salah was very wide in the game and didn’t get much help. I felt that[Darwin] Nunez had a couple of decent efforts but he didn’t look very good.

“I look at Carvalho and Elliott as two top, top talents but to start them both as number eights, that’s an open midfield.

“I feel that Liverpool do not look like title contenders to me at the moment. That can change.

“All around, everyone can improve in that team.”

Liverpool

After this weekend’s game was postponed due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Liverpool are next in action on Tuesday (13 September) when they welcome Ajax to Anfield.

They are next scheduled to be in Premier League action on Sunday (18 September) when they travel to Chelsea but there are question marks over that game due to the availability of police in London.

In other news, Liverpool have been told a “root and branch review” is needed as major Premier League news is confirmed.
