Agbonlahor: Newcastle United backed to agree Allan Saint-Maximin sale after new development

Newcastle United could consider selling Allan Saint-Maximin after his latest injury setback, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker suggested Newcastle cannot rely on Saint-Maximin as they eye a potential top-four finish this season.

The Athletic reported on Monday (19 December) that the 25-year-old has suffered a setback after limping off during his side’s 2-1 friendly win over Rayo Vallecano on Saturday (17 December).

The winger has struggled with various injuries during his time at St. James’ Park and has not started a Premier League game since August due to a hamstring and muscle complaint.

Saint-Maximin is under contract at Newcastle until the summer of 2026 after signing a long-term deal under Steve Bruce in October 2020.

“I think that will affect them keeping Saint-Maximin,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“He’s a very electric player, he gets fans off their feet but his injury record is so bad.

“Newcastle might be thinking to themselves ‘We want to go to the next level, we can’t really be having players that are so injury prone’.

“Maybe it’s something they look at, get some money in for Saint-Maximin and move him on because they’ve got a real chance of getting into the top-four but they need all their players fit.”

Saint-Maximin has scored once and provided three assists in eight appearances across all competitions this term, including four starts.

The Frenchman has provided 32 goal contributions in 101 games across his Newcastle career.
