Agbonlahor on Leeds United appointing Steven Gerrard after source’s reveal – ‘this could be the end’

Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Steven Gerrard to “steer clear” of the Leeds United job as a potential relegation could “finish him off as a manager”.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Whites need a manager with more Premier League “knowhow” ahead of a second relegation dogfight in two seasons.

Sources told this site on Monday (20 February) that Leeds are discussing the possibility of appointing former Aston Villa boss Gerrard and club favourite Gary McAllister until the end of the season.

Leeds United

The Elland Road club have failed to land their top targets since sacking Jesse Marsch earlier this month – with moves for Carlos Corberan, Arne Slot, and Andoni Iraola all failing to materialise.

Gerrard himself was sacked at Aston Villa in October 2022 after just 11 months in charge – having overseen six defeats in his last 11 league games.

The Leeds board faced an ugly fan backlash following the 1-0 away loss at Goodison Park on Saturday (18 February) – which left the Yorkshire giants two points from safety in 19th place.

When asked if Gerrard could be the answer to the Whites’ problems, Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “No, I would steer clear if I was Gerrard.

“Leeds and Southampton – these are jobs which can finish you off as a manager if the worst happens at the end of the season. If Gerrard takes Leeds down, it could be the end for him.

“They’re both in a really bad situation, and neither set of players have turned up for their manager so far this season.

“For me, I wouldn’t touch Leeds with a barge pole.

“I think they need someone with a bit more Premier League experience and knowhow because they’re in real trouble now.”
