Agbonlahor slams ‘Chelsea reject’ Timo Werner amid Newcastle United latest

Gabby Agbonlahor has warned Newcastle against moving for “Chelsea reject” Timo Werner this summer.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 26-year-old is “not good enough” and wouldn’t even be an upgrade on Magpies star Callum Wilson.

According to the Daily Mail (26 July), Chelsea are open to letting Werner leave the club this summer, with Newcastle one of the sides monitoring the situation.

The report claims Chelsea want to sign a replacement for the striker before sanctioning an exit – with Juventus and former club RB Leipzig also in the hunt.

Werner notched 11 goals in 37 games last term and has largely struggled to adapt since his £47.5million move to Chelsea in 2020.

Agbonlahor suggested Newcastle need to be aiming higher if they want to achieve their ambition to become one of England’s top clubs.

When asked if he would be a good addition at St James’ Park, he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Not for me.

“I think Newcastle would be stupid to bring him in. Where Newcastle want to be going, they don’t want to be signing Chelsea rejects.

“He’s not good enough, he doesn’t score goals.

“Callum Wilson is better than Timo Werner, it just doesn’t make sense. The wages he will want, the fee – it doesn’t make sense.

“Werner, for me, should be headed to La Liga or back to the Bundesliga. He’s not good enough for the Premier League.”

Newcastle have signed Nick Pope, Matt Targett, and Sven Botman thus far this summer.

Wilson is the Magpies’ only senior striking option at present.
