Agbonlahor suggests real reason Chelsea axed Thomas Tuchel

Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed Thomas Tuchel’s “extremely boring” brand of football would have had Chelsea “fighting” for a top-four finish this season.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested owner Todd Boehly will have grown tired of the 49-year-old’s “excuses” after their Champions League loss against Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday (6 September).

Chelsea confirmed on Wednesday (7 September) that they had parted company with Tuchel in the wake of their loss in Croatia.

The Blues have started the new campaign with just 10 points from a possible 18 despite spending a British-record £271.1million during the summer window.

Chelsea have moved quickly to secure a replacement for the German, confirming the appointment of Brighton boss Graham Potter on Thursday (8 September).

Agbonlahor insisted the Stamford Bridge club should be targeting a “top-two” finish after their summer splurge.

He told Football Insider’s Connor Whitley: “Last season I was extremely bored by Chelsea’s football – and this season started off the same.

“When you’re spending the money they have, and with the players he has available – they needed to be producing better football.

“Boehly was probably thinking the same.

“I feel like it’s going to be a better time for Chelsea. Tuchel’s excuses last night would have been the final straw for the owner.”

“There are no excuses – when you have that talent in the squad, there are managers around who can do a lot better.

“The owner was probably thinking: ‘if it carries on like this, we’ll end up fighting for top four.’

“Chelsea should be looking to be in the top two.
