Agbonlahor ‘sure’ about Man City recalling Joao Cancelo as loan turns sour

Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed there is not likely to be a way back for on-loan defender Joao Cancelo at Man City despite doubts over his future at Bayern Munich.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted doubts over his attitude and application must be a “wake-up call” for the 28-year-old.

As quoted by Fabrizio Romano (9 March), Bayern Munich director Hasan Salihamidžić has revealed Cancelo hasn’t been “playing or training the way we had imagined” in recent weeks.

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato (7 March), the German giants are “unlikely” to activate the £62million buy option set in the loan deal for the “frustrated” defender.

Cancelo has been benched for Bayern’s last three games – including the Champions League last-16 second-leg win over Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday (8 March).

He was allowed to leave Man City late in the January window after falling behind Kyle Walker and Rico Lewis in the pecking order.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I don’t think there’s a way back for him at City.

“His training and his attitude was part of the reason Pep got rid of him.

“If you’ve gone to Bayern and they’re now saying the same, then it just proves Pep’s point. I’m sure he won’t want someone who can’t give 100% in training.

“This has got to be a wake-up call for Cancelo.

Man City

“I’ve been there. Sometimes you can’t be bothered with training, and you turn up in games.

“But football has totally changed now. If you’re not training at a top level, then you aren’t going to play.”
