Agbonlahor sure about Newcastle United completing Conor Gallagher signing this summer

Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed Newcastle United “can’t go near” Chelsea ace Conor Gallagher in the upcoming summer window after their Champions League qualification.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted a deal for Leicester’s James Maddison is a “must” – rather than moving for Gallagher, 23.

According to the Daily Mail (15 May), Newcastle are keen on signing Chelsea’s Gallagher this summer as Eddie Howe looks to bolster his midfield.

The report claims the England international is expected to be part of the clear-out at Stamford Bridge.

Gallagher has notched three goals and one assist across 45 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea this term.

His contract with the Blues runs until June 2025.

Agbonlahor claimed Gallagher’s “level is mid-table” following Chelsea’s struggles this season.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I don’t see why Newcastle would look at Conor Gallagher.

“For me, Maddison is a must before you even look at Gallagher.

“You’re in the Champions League and you’re owned by Saudi Arabia. You are such an attraction – and you can do a lot better than Gallagher.

“His level is mid-table.

“Newcastle’s level has changed since three or four months ago, and they can’t go near him.”

Newcastle

Newcastle spent a reported £160million on new arrivals in the 2022-23 campaign and are expected to spend big again this summer.

Eddie Howe’s current central midfield options include Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock.
