Agbonlahor swipes at Cristian Romero after ‘bizarre’ development – ‘it will cost Tottenham’
Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Cristian Romero will “cost Tottenham” if he keeps on diving into challenges which don’t “make sense”.
The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted someone at Spurs needs to “sit down” with the 24-year-old and “get him to calm down”.
Romero was dismissed during the 1-0 win over Man City on Sunday (5 February) for two bookable offences after challenges on Erling Haaland and Jack Grealish.
The red card was his first in the Premier League but he has already received 13 cautions in just 36 English top-flight games since coming to Spurs.
Argentina international Romero has been a mainstay for Antonio Conte’s side when fit this season but will now sit on the sidelines as Tottenham face Leicester City on Saturday (11 February).
The Lilywhites sit fifth in the Premier League – just one point behind fourth-place Newcastle having played a game more.
Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “When I watch Romero, he’s always making me laugh.
“He’s like an old-school defender who gets very bored in games.
“The first yellow against Haaland was bizarre. Haaland was in his own half – why go off the floor and slide in?
“Someone needs to sit down with him and get him to calm down.
“He needs action to get him through a game, and that’s why he’ll get booked so often.

“It doesn’t make sense. Not many centre-halves dive in as much as he does – and he puts himself at risk.
“He can’t help himself, he just gets bored. But he’s going to cost Tottenham.”
