Agbonlahor tells Kalvin Phillips to quit Man City this summer after what he just saw
Gabby Agbonlahor has suggested Kalvin Phillips should quit Man City if he wants to ensure his place in the England side for Euro 2024.
The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 27-year-old is struggling for game time at the Etihad Stadium as he is “nowhere near the level of Rodri”.
Phillips played 90 minutes for just the second time this season as England claimed a 2-1 victory over Italy in qualifying for Euro 2024 on Thursday (23 March).
He has been limited to 344 minutes of club football in the 2022-23 season after joining Man City for a reported fee of £42million last summer (2022).
City boss Pep Guardiola publicly condemned Phillips for being “overweight” and in poor condition when he returned after the World Cup in Qatar.
Football Insider revealed in January that West Ham have reignited their interest in the midfielder after they were linked with a £50million bid for the former Leeds star last summer.
Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “He’s nowhere near the level of Rodri.
“He’s also had his injury problems again.
“The Premier League and Champions League are no walk in the park. City have had to play their best side in every game – and he’s not in it.
“Kalvin Phillips should have known this when he signed.
“It’s now a case of him making a decision. When the Euros come next year, he might not get in that side because he isn’t playing.
“He might have to leave and get more game time because it can’t go on like this.
“He looked a yard off the pace against Italy, and that will continue as long as he isn’t getting regular football.”
