Agbonlahor thrilled by Gerard Deulofeu update amid new Aston Villa verdict – ‘he’s a 9/10’

Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Aston Villa to complete the cut-price signing of Gerard Deulofeu in the January window.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 28-year-old could be a “brilliant addition” if he can find consistency under experienced boss Unai Emery.

According to the Daily Mail (31 December), Emery is exploring the possibility of bringing Deulofeu back to the Premier League as he seeks to put his own stamp on this Aston Villa side.

The report claims Watford winger Ismalia Sarr is still on the list of targets after his proposed move to Villa Park fell through last summer (2022).

Deulofeu has already notched 20 goals and 24 assists in 127 Premier League games for Watford and Everton.

He is out of contract at Italian club Udinese in the summer of 2024.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I really liked him when I saw him at Everton and Watford.

“He’s direct and really tricky. The only thing is – in some games he would be a 9/10, and in others, he would be a 2/10.

“If Unai Emery can get some consistency out of him, then he would be a brilliant addition.

“He’s the sort of player Villa need. They’ve got a decent squad of players, but another out-and-out winger would be perfect.

“John McGinn has done well coming off the right, but he’s not a winger. If you ask him, he doesn’t want to be playing there.

“Leon Bailey is quality, but he’s hot and cold. Some games he isn’t at it, and Deulofeu would just mean Emery has a quality replacement for him.

“I think he’d be a great signing, and I don’t think he’d cost a lot to bring.”
