Agbonlahor tips Trent Alexander-Arnold to retire after ‘big’ Liverpool reveal via BBC

Gabby Agbonlahor has suggested Trent Alexander-Arnold may retire from international duty and focus on Liverpool.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed Alexander-Arnold’s latest snub from Gareth Southgate will have a “big” impact on his confidence.

The 23-year-old did not play a minute of football in the recent international break and was left out of the 23-man matchday squad for the 3-3 draw with Germany on Monday (26 September).

As quoted by BBC Sport earlier this week (27 September), Southgate claimed that Kieran Trippier’s “all-round game” was ahead of Alexander-Arnold.

“I think Trent might quit international football,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“To get overlooked after he keeps turning up to squads. He could have used these two weeks to rest and refresh for Liverpool, maybe have some days off and get a bit of sun.

“To go away and not play, sometimes it take its toll on you. We’ve seen other players in the past do it, Carragher retired.

“Sometimes, if you keep going away and not get picked you’ve got to look at the situation and think ‘If he fancies Reece James, Kyle Walker and Trippier before me, then why am I wasting my time going away?’

“I think it could be a case of Trent soon, especially if he’s left out of the World Cup squad, retiring from England and international duty until a new manager is in charge. I would if I’m honest.

“It’s a big dent on your confidence. You’re playing week in, week out for Liverpool and you’re not even getting on the bench for England, it can take a lot out of your confidence.”
