Agbonlahor: Tottenham could be signing right-back better than Djed Spence after twist

Antonio Conte will want Tottenham to sign a better and more experienced right-back than Djed Spence, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed Spence would be a good option is not capable of playing 38 games a season for a club that should be challenging for the Premier League title.

A recruitment source told Football Insider last month (23 May) that Spurs have opened talks with Middlesbrough for a deal for the 21-year-old right-back.

This site then reported a week later (30 May) Brentford had joined Tottenham in the race to sign Spence.

His stock has risen majorly after a successful 2021-22 campaign where he played 46 times on loan at Nottingham Forest as they won promotion back to the top-flight via the play-offs.

“It’s difficult because Spurs want to start fighting for the league,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“They are going to start attracting players, they’ve already got Perisic. They are not going to want to just fight for top four, they will want to win the league. That’s what Conte wants to do as a manager.

“Spence can be brought in as an option but I don’t think he’s the answer for 38 games a season. I still think he would want more experience in there, to be honest.”

Spence has two years left to run on his Boro contract and was allowed to join Forest after falling out of favour under Neil Warnock.

Chris Wilder has since replaced Warnock at the Riverside but is unlikely Spence has a future at the club.

In other news, Tottenham have been offered a West Ham star who starts every match.
