Agbonlahor: Tyler Roberts will be a ‘Championship player next season’ after Leeds United update

Tyler Roberts will be a Championship player next season after he was ruled out for the rest of the season for Leeds United.

That is the view of ex-Aston Villa and England forward Gabby Agbonlahor, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Roberts’ situation at Elland Road after a crushing injury blow.

Leeds released a statement yesterday (7 March) confirming the forward is set to spend the net three months on the sidelines after undergoing surgery on his hamstring injury.

He suffered the setback during the Whites’ 1-0 loss to Leicester City but played on regardless as his side chased an equaliser.

Jesse Marsch had used all three of his substitutes and was not able to replace Roberts who himself had come off the bench.

Roberts was called upon ahead of Patrick Bamford but before Joe Gelhardt with Leeds chasing the game at the King Power.

Asked whether the Wales international may be left behind under Marsch, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “First of all, it’s a shame with his injury.

“But he’s not a Premier League player. Sometimes when you come to the big league you find your level and the Premier League is not his level.

“I’m sure next season he’ll be in the Championship.”

Roberts has scored twice and provided three assists in 50 Premier League games for Leeds since they won promotion in 2020.

That includes one goal and an assist in 23 appearances this term, including seven starts.

The 23-year-old is under contract in west Yorkshire until the summer of 2024.
