Agbonlahor verdict on Brendan Rodgers taking Tottenham job after interview reveal

Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Tottenham should not consider appointing Brendan Rodgers as their next boss.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested it would put a mark against Spurs’ ambition if they employed a manager sacked by relegation-threatened Leicester.

Sources told this site on Friday (14 April) that Rodgers is interested in being the next Tottenham manager and is expected to be interviewed for the post.

It is believed that Rodgers has been admired for a long time by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy – stretching back to his spell at Swansea a decade ago.

The Northern Irishman was sacked by Leicester earlier this month with the Foxes staring down the barrel of potential relegation to the Championship.

He won the FA Cup with the Midlands side and masterminded league and cup triumphs during his spell with Scottish giants Celtic.

When asked if Rodgers could have similar success at Spurs, Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “No.

“I can’t see them going for Brendan Rodgers, at all.

“I do like him as a manager, but if you’re going for a manager who has been sacked by a team who are 19th in the table – what does that say about Spurs?

“They’re going to be interviewing so many people between now and the end of the season.

“From what I know, they’ll take their time and see who impresses them – but I just can’t see Rodgers as an option.

“If I’m him, I’d take a big six or seven-month break and come back in October, when a lot of managers seem to be getting sacked.”
