Agbonlahor volunteers for VAR duty after BBC’s ‘clueless’ West Ham twist

Gabby Agbonlahor has volunteered for VAR duty after West Ham were controversially denied an equaliser in their 2-1 loss to Chelsea last week (3 September).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed VAR would have a “100 per cent” success rate if ex-pros and managers were involved.

Maxwel Cornet saw his late equaliser at Stamford Bridge chalked off for a foul on Edouard Mendy by Jarrod Bowen.

BBC Sport reported on Sunday (4 September) that the PGMOL had accepted they had got the decision wrong and would cooperate with a Premier League enquiry.

“Any ex-footballer or ex-manager would have given a goal for West Ham,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“These referees can’t do three kick-ups, they have never played the game so they don’t have a clue what’s going on.

“They’ll be like ‘Oh yes, Bowen’s foot did touch Mendy so maybe that’s a foul’.

“If you’ve got the footballing brain of an ex-player or ex-manager you look at it and think ‘Oh yes, Bowen might have ended up touching him but he had nowhere else to go. Mendy parried the ball and it was his mistake’. Everyone would have given the goal to West Ham.

“There’s a lot of change that needs to happen and I feel whoever is in charge of these decisions need to bring in ex-players.

“I make myself available. With ex-players in VAR then I guarantee you that 100 per cent of decisions would be exactly right.

“I know all these decisions.”

In other news, Kieran Maguire has claimed the UK Government are likely livid with West Ham as a Russian alliance emerges.
