Agent confirms Leeds United one of several clubs interested in 26-year-old attacker
By Matt Farr
Leeds United are interested in signing Huesca attacker Samu Saiz this summer, according to the player’s agent.
Saiz’s representative, Juan Moreno, confirmed that his client had been attracting “firm” interest from the Championship promotion contenders, as well as several La Liga sides ahead of the new season.
He told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “Samuel has a firm (interest) from Leeds United and also other Premier League clubs in Spain.”
The 26-year-old was in fine form for the Spanish Second Division outfit during the 2016-17 season, where he scored 12 goals and supplied nine assists from 44 appearances in all competitions.
He began his career with Real Madrid at the age of just eight, but quit the club in 2011 having failed to break through into the first-team setup at the Bernabeu.
Saiz has also turned out for rivals Atletico Madrid, where he played for their B team, but has been handed an important role with his current employers, Huesca.
The secondary striker has one more year left to run on his current contract at the club, but he could be on the move this summer amid keen interest from Leeds.
But while Moreno also confirmed that Saiz would be interested in a move to England, Leeds will face tough competition for his signature.
The Yorkshire Evening Post claim that La Liga quartet Real Betis, Las Palmas, Alaves and Eibar were also hot on the heels of the impressive No.10.
The report also details that Saiz had previously worked alongside current Leeds director of football Victor Orta at Sevilla, when the Elland Road chief was part of their recruitment team.
Leeds have already confirmed their first summer signing under new manager Thomas Christiansen as FC Twente midfielder Mateusz Klich, but Leeds appear to have identified Saiz as their next potential new recruit.
Football Insider verdict
To put it simply, Leeds need to find themselves more options in the goalscoring department. Albeit not at the highest level, Saiz scored more than ten goals for Huesca last season, and could do a reasonable job for the club if he were to sign on for next season. He can complement Wood in the same line-up as a secondary striker, playing in behind the New Zealand international, who is likely to lead the line again for Leeds next term. There will be doubts over his ability to perform in England, but there is no harm in giving it a go, because they could land themselves a top talent.
