Alan Shearer backs Tottenham duo to take this big opportunity

By Amir Mir

Alan Shearer has backed Tottenham duo Harry Kane and Dele Alli to take the vacant England armband.

Former Premier League striker Shearer believes the England captaincy is a “big opportunity” and he believes Gareth Southgate has a number of candidates to choose from.

Shearer named Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana, Torino goalkeeper Joe Hart and Manchester City defender John Stones as other possible candidates to Kane and Alli.

The Three Lions suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Germany on Wednesday night with centre-back Gary Cahill given the captaincy for the night.

At this moment in time, there has been no successor to Wayne Rooney as Shearer explained how Southgate will pick his England captain.

“What Gareth will do is pick a captain from game to game,” Shearer told Coral. “I think that will be the sensible thing to do until someone screams at him that they should be the captain.

“There is a big opportunity there for someone. There are one or two candidates, Lallana, Dele Alli, Harry Kane, John Stones, and Joe Hart.”

Spurs academy product Kane is currently on the sidelines with injury and he missed the friendly encounter against the German’s.

Midfielder Alli played that match and impressed the traveling supporters as Southgate’s side were beaten by a magnificent Lukas Podolski strike.

The former Arsenal forward was playing his last match for his country and he captained them to a win in Dortmund.

After that friendly defeat, Southgate will now focus his attention to the World Cup qualifier against Lithuania.

The international minnows will be looking to cause an unlikely upset at Wembley on Sunday evening.
