Alan Shearer cannot believe what ‘sensational’ player has done at Aston Villa

Alan Shearer was eager to wax lyrical about Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers when he named his Premier League team of the season so far.

Rogers has attracted interest from elsewhere in January, due to just how good he has been for the Villans this season.

The midfielder got off to a slow start, but has scored seven goals and provided four assists in the league so far.

Rogers scored on Saturday as Villa beat Tottenham 2-1 in the FA Cup, the second time the 23-year-old has scored at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season.

Villa have found themselves in a race for the Premier League title this season, despite having started the season in awful fashion.

Alan Shearer stunned by Morgan Rogers

Rogers’ form should be no surprise for Villa, considering the way he performed for Unai Emery‘s side last season.

The midfielder was awarded the PFA Young Player of the Year award after a stunning season that saw him score 14 goals and provide 13 assists across all competitions.

The 23-year-old arrived from Middlesbrough in 2024 and appeared to find his tune in the Premier League almost immediately.

Within months, Rogers was starring for the Villans and putting his incredible ability to carry the ball on full display.

The England international sometimes appears unstoppable with the ball at his feet, driving forward and seeing his opponents unable to cope with his brute strength.

And once in the position to strike, Rogers rarely makes the mistake of putting the ball anywhere but into the corner.

After naming him in the team of the season so far, Shearer told the Premier League: “His ball-playing ability and quality of goals has been sensational.

“He has not just been a match-winner, but a game-changer to help Villa stay right in the thick of the title race. An unbelievable season.”

‘Really happy’ Rogers not going anywhere

Understandably, there is a boatload of interest building in Rogers. The midfielder is just 23, but already among the most dangerous midfielders in the Premier League.

And he is set to play a key role for England at next year’s World Cup, too, having emerged among Thomas Tuchel‘s favourites.

But Villa are not ready to let Rogers go anywhere, and he does not intend to leave, either.

“I’m so happy,” he told Villa following confirmation that he had signed a new contract at Villa Park in November.

“The faith from the people at the club is a really nice feeling, and I couldn’t wait to sign. I’m really happy.”

“The most important thing for me is enjoying my football and being able to express myself,” he added. “There’s no reason why I wouldn’t want to stay here.”
