‘They should be winning the league’ – Shearer gives verdict on Newcastle promotion
By Matt Bullin
Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has given his verdict on the Toon’s promotion winning season by insisting the Premier League is a better place with them in it.
Rafa Benitez’ side clinched promotion to the Premier League last Monday night as they beat Preston 4-1.
The result meant that a top-two finish was secured for Newcastle, but after the most recent set of results they have a real chance of winning the title.
The Toon beat Cardiff 2-0 on Friday night courtesy of goals from Christian Atsu and Isaac Hayden, meanwhile league leaders Brighton lost 1-0 to Bristol City on Saturday afternoon.
The result’s mean Newcastle are just one point behind Chris Hughton’s side with just one game to play.
Speaking to Coral, via their official Twitter account, Shearer shared his verdict on Newcastle’s promotion.
He said: “I’m absolutely [delighted]. It took it’s time coming. It was a great evening on Monday [against Preston], the second second half performance was excellent.
“I know a lot of people would say because of the size of the club, because of the budget, they should be winning the league but I don’t think anyone is bothered here in Newcastle.
“They’re just bothered about getting back in the Premier League where we all feel Newcastle belong. The Premier League is a better place with Newcastle let’s face it.”
By winning promotion Newcastle became the 21st club in the Premier League era to return to the top flight at the first time of asking after relegation.
Shearer scored 148 goals for the Toon in 303 league appearances, and helped them to two FA Cup finals and one second place finish in the Premier League.
The 46-year-old also represented England 63 times and scored 30 goals.
