Alan Shearer points out major flaw in Tottenham transformation
By Danny Wright
Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has pointed out that Tottenham’s transformation into a top Premier League side will not be complete until they win silverware.
Under the leadership of Mauricio Pochettino, Spurs have changed from perennial underachievers into Premier League title contenders, having finished third and second in the last two seasons.
They are looking good to once again push for the league title this season, however Manchester City appear to be running away with things at the top while Manchester United keeping stalling.
Spurs haven’t been able to even win a League Cup or FA Cup though in their recent resurgence, and Shearer has highlighted that major flaw as being something that could see Pochettino eventually leave one day for one of the giants of European football.
“Spurs have proved they can beat anyone on their day but they still have to win a trophy for them to fulfil their potential,” said Shearer on the Coral website.
“They are out of one cup competition in the League Cup already this season.
“Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with Real Madrid and a few people have said he could be their next manager if they do replace Zidane, however, the same can be said about him in that he also needs to win a trophy.
“We keep saying how promising the team is and how impressive it is that they bring young players through but eventually they have to turn that into silverware.”
Tottenham beat Real Madrid 3-1 at Wembley earlier this month in what was no doubt one of the biggest European results the club has achieved in their proud history.
The North London side booked their spot in the last-16 of the Champions League after Christmas with that win but it still seems like they are too far away from any top honours like that or the Premier League.
The FA Cup remains the most likely competition for Pochettino and his players to target success in, especially having fell at the semi-finals to Chelsea last season, who went on to lose to Arsenal in the final.
In other Tottenham news, this BBC pundit has admitted he was underwhelmed by the performance of this Spurs player on international duty.
