Alan Shearer reveals what’s really going on with Mohamed Salah at Liverpool this season

Mohamed Salah’s poor form continued as Liverpool were beaten by Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Egyptian star failed to score as Liverpool lost 2-1 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on 4 October, despite Cody Gakpo’s second-half goal.

Salah enjoyed an incredible season as the Reds won the Premier League title last term, notching 34 goals and 23 assists across all competitions.

However, following Liverpool’s defeat to Chelsea, the 33-year-old has failed to produce a goal contribution in each of his last three games.

Arne Slot’s squad changes have hindered Mohamed Salah

Arne Slot enjoyed a busy transfer window as Liverpool signed strikers Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak, while also bolstering their defence with the acquisitions of Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong.

However, the Merseyside outfit have lost three consecutive games across all competitions, slipping behind Arsenal in the Premier League title race.

Discussing Salah’s form on The Rest Is Football [6 October], Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer said: “For years now, everything at Liverpool, or most things, have been around Salah and rightly so because when you’re scoring 25, 30, 35 goals, and you can get away with certain things.

But there’s so much going on at Liverpool at the minute, in terms of trying to get Isak in, or (Florian) Wirtz in, or Ekitike in, or trying to find the balance of which fullback he gets in.

Then, to give them a little bit more protection when Mo doesn’t track back, and he’s suffering a little bit at the minute, there’s no doubt about it.

Liverpool have to beat Manchester United

Liverpool’s strong transfer window has put them in a solid position to retain their Premier League title, but rivals Arsenal also enjoyed a successful window with the additions of Eberechi Eze, Viktor Gyokeres, Noni Madueke, and Martin Zubimendi.

The Reds have lost three games on the spin

The Reds were in pole position when they defeated the Gunners 1-0 on 31 August, thanks to Dominik Szoboszlai’s free-kick, which got the better of David Raya.

However, the likes of Eze have subsequently inspired Arsenal to three wins in their last four Premier League games, including a 2-0 triumph over London rivals West Ham United.

Therefore, Slot cannot afford another slip-up when his side face Manchester United on 19 October, in their first game after the international break.

Despite Man United’s 2-0 win over Sunderland on 4 October, Ruben Amorim remains under pressure, with the Red Devils frequently failing to perform.

The Old Trafford outfit will be determined to beat their fierce North West rivals Liverpool on away soil, which could derail Slot’s title challenge, especially if Arsenal maintain their form.
