Alan Shearer will be absolutely reeling after what he just had to say about Sunderland vs Arsenal
Alan Shearer was forced to put his Newcastle United allegiances to one side when analysing the clash between Sunderland and Arsenal.
Granit Xhaka’s reunion with Arsenal was a main topic ahead of the Premier League meeting at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, 8 November, and, unsurprisingly, he was immense in midfield.
Mikel Arteta is under pressure to win silverware this season, having not lifted a trophy with the Gunners since 2019-20, and their title charge certainly took a hit against the Black Cats away from home.
Of course, Shearer’s beloved Newcastle are struggling for consistent form across all competitions so far, though after their latest victory over Athletic Club, their Champions League journey is currently at a high.

Alan Shearer praises Sunderland’s performance against Arsenal
When he’s not live on air, Shearer is usually at St James’ Park, watching the highs and lows of the Magpies’ 2025-26 campaign, but it was all about the Black Cats on Saturday, 8 November.
Speaking live on Match of the Day, transcribed by BBC Sport (8 November, 6:26pm), Shearer said: “I’ve been mightily impressed with Sunderland in the first half. They’ve been aggressive, disciplined and stayed tight at the back.
“Arsenal’s full-backs have been excellent this season, but they have struggled to get into the game tonight. It’s a credit to Sunderland that they haven’t been involved, so far.”
Regis Le Bris‘ side had seriously frustrated Arsenal in the first half, finally taking a rare chance to go ahead thanks to a special Dan Ballard strike, before netting in the final stages to seal a 2-2 draw.
Brian Brobbey nets incredible equaliser at the Stadium of Light
Arteta’s side appeared to have completed the turnaround at the Stadium of Light after goals from Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard, but Brian Brobbey absolutely stole the show.
Gabriel Magalhaes was furious about the non-awarding of a free-kick for a high boot from the goalscorer, but it was just an incredibly acrobatic finish from the striker, who only joined in the summer.
Brobbey also set up the winner against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, so the Dutchman will be hoping to get his chance in the starting lineup sooner rather than later. Wilson Isidor might have something to say about that.
