Toby Alderweireld has highlighted the importance of Tottenham duo Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele to the team.

The two central midfielders starred once again for Spurs on Saturday as they narrowly edged out Middlesbrough 1-0 at White Hart Lane in the Premier League.

Harry Kane scored his 16th goal of the season across all competitions from the penalty spot and ensured the north London club cut the gap to leaders Chelsea back to nine points.

However, it was Spurs’ midfield duo who delivered yet another assured performance and helped the team dictate the play.

Alderweireld feels that the midfield pairing are critical to the team’s success and have been standout performers during the campaign so far.

“It makes our lives much easier with them. They are both playing fantastic football this season they help us a lot. We’re very happy with them. They are both playing a wonderful season,” Alderweireld said, as quoted by the club’s official Twitter account.

Wanyama and Dembele have cemented their positions in the strongest starting line-up and have been ever-presents this season.

Mauricio Pochettino prefers to have two players protecting the defence and has found the perfect combination at the north London club.

Eric Dier and Harry Winks are alternative options in the central positions, but Wanyama and Dembele have developed a sound understanding.
