Alderweireld delivers Twitter verdict after Tottenham win v Middlesbrough
By Dominic Toner
Toby Alerweireld hailed another Tottenham clean sheet on Twitter as they secured a narrow Premier League victory on Saturday over Middlesbrough.
Spurs earned a 1-0 home win against Aitor Karanka’s side and tightened their grip on second-place in the league table, but remain nine points behind runaway leaders Chelsea.
Harry Kane scored the decisive goal in the game from the penalty spot after Heung-Min Son was fouled in the area by Bernardo Espinosa.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side furthered their impressive defensive statistics with another clean sheet, despite being without senior pair Jan Vertonghen and Danny Rose to injury.
Alderweireld was delighted with “three points and another clean sheet” on his personal Twitter account.
Spurs have proved defensively resolute this season, conceding just 16 goals in their 24 Premier League games.
The north London club resorted to a back four due to their absentees as Eric Dier partnered Alderweireld at centre-back, while Kyle Walker and Ben Davies were in the full-back positions.
They are now unbeaten in their last 11 games across all competitions and appear to be the main challengers to Chelsea for the title.
Spurs face a huge match away to Liverpool in their next game, but their upcoming opponents suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to Hull on Saturday.
