Alex Iwobi set for position change under Marco Silva as Fulham injury blow emerges

Alex Iwobi remains an important member of Marco Silva’s squad during the playmaker’s third season at Fulham.

The 29-year-old started in a winger role for Fulham upon signing from Everton in 2023, notching six goals and two assists in 33 games at Craven Cottage.

Iwobi has now adapted to a deep-lying midfield role in South London, but having started 21 Premier League games this season, with six goal contributions to his name, he is just as key, if not more.

Silva‘s side massively missed the Nigerian international during the Africa Cup of Nations, losing to the likes of Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup and Leeds United in the league.

Fulham suffer new injury blow to Kevin

Given that for most of his career, Iwobi has been a left-winger, the playmaker can play anywhere in the middle of the park for the Cottagers, and that might be needed until the end of the season.

Once Sasa Lukic returns from injury, he will partner with Sander Berge as protection for the defence, but by no means should Iwobi be dropped to the bench at Craven Cottage.

But heading into the next few games, Silva might be without either of his first-choice left-wingers. Samuel Chukwueze has not featured since the 3-0 defeat to Man City.

And now, Kevin has suffered a new setback following the win over Sunderland, in which the Brazilian lasted just 44 minutes before being replaced by Oscar Bobb.

Alex Iwobi can star in former position at Craven Cottage

It has been officially confirmed that Kevin is likely to undergo surgery on his fifth metatarsal, possibly ruling him out for several weeks and leaving Fulham with fewer options.

That is exactly why, with 11 games of the Premier League season remaining, Iwobi should make a rare appearance on the left flank, with European qualification still on the cards.

Tottenham, West Ham and Nottingham Forest are all up next, three teams battling relegation from the Premier League, which should be nine points in the bag for the Cottagers.

With Harry Wilson on the opposite wing, Raul Jimenez up front and Emile Smith Rowe as an attacking midfielder, Silva has more than enough talent in the squad to contend with injuries.
