Alex Lowry: Newcastle have ‘advantage’ in Rangers sensation chase after source’s reveal – expert
Scotland’s proximity to Newcastle will give them an “advantage” as they battle for the signature of highly-rated Rangers sensation Alex Lowry, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 18-year-old’s potential arrival could herald the formation of a “real pathway” for youth under the new ownership at St James’ Park.
Football Insider exclusively revealed on Monday (18 April) that Newcastle have held talks over signing Rangers youngster Lowry this summer.

This site revealed earlier this month (11 April) that the Glasgow giants have offered the attacking midfielder, 18, a new contract worth £5,000-a-week after seeing their opening offer rejected.
It is understood that Newcastle are at the front of the queue of Premier League clubs keen to lure Lowry south of the border.
When asked if Newcastle’s proximity to Scotland gives them an added edge in the race, Whelan told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Yeah, absolutely – that will be an advantage.”
“It’s no different from what Leeds United have done. Going to the teams around them and taking some of the best talent in the local area for their youth sides.
“It’s a great tactic by Newcastle to try and strengthen their club from the bottom up and help their youth sides grow with better players.
“It’s not all about spending £60-70million on every position.

“It’s about building the infrastructure to be able to produce and progress these young players.
“This could be the start of a real pathway at Newcastle.”
