Alex McLeish: This new Rangers recruit stands out most

By Danny Wright

Former Rangers boss Alex McLeish believes that Bruno Alves sticks out like a sore thumb in comparison to Pedro Caixinha’s other new recruits.

The centre-back became the first player to sign for the Light Blues under the charge of Caixinha, in what has turned out to be a massive summer overhaul of the squad.

Despite all the new faces, Caixinha and his side suffered arguably their most humiliating defeat in history as they were dumped out of the Europa League by Luxembourg minnows Progres Niederkorn last week.

Alves didn’t feature in either of the legs against Progres, which has led McLeish to suggest that Rangers will see a massive improvement when he plays.

“We’ve still got to see Graham Dorrans and Bruno Alves, who had a good tournament with Portugal during the Confederations Cup. He looks a leader,” said the former Scotland boss, as quoted by the Herald.

“It’s amazing what two or three players can do to a team in terms of inspiring others with confidence as well. If ever they needed a leader, it is now, and Alves is the one sticking out like a sore thumb.

“I don’t know what his legs are like now. Obviously he is playing alongside great players with Portugal, but he didn’t look like his legs were struggling.”

Alves and Dorrans are joined by Ryan Jack, Fabio Cardoso, Daniel Candeias, Dalcio, Carlos Pena, Eduardo Herrera and Alfredo Morelos in signing for the Glasgow club this summer.

Caixinha made it no secret that he was looking to stamp his own authority on his Ibrox squad, and has shown a ruthless attitude towards signing up new players.

Barrie McKay and Andy Halliday have both secured exits while the Scottish Sun has recently reported that the Light Blues are in talks with Partick over the sale of Michael O’Halloran.

In other Rangers news, this defender has also secured his Ibrox exit.
