Alfredo Morelos: ‘Alarm bells ringing’ for Rangers after ‘catastrophic’ injury update – pundit
Noel Whelan has claimed Alfredo Morelos’ potential absence could be a “catastrophe” for Rangers.
The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 25-year-old’s injury has set “alarm bells ringing” at Ibrox.
According to Sky Sports (27 March), Morelos is a doubt for Sunday’s (3 April) crunch Old Firm clash after being sent home from Colombia duty with a thigh injury.
He was unable to take part in his country’s 3-0 World Cup qualifying win against Bolivia.
The striker faces a race against time to be fit for another huge game against Braga in the Europa League quarter-final next week (7 April).
Whelan claimed the news has come at a “terrible time” for Rangers ahead of an important fortnight.
“Alarm bells will be ringing for Rangers, that’s for sure,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“It’s come at a terrible time for Giovanni van Bronckhorst. Morelos has been back to his best since he’s come in, he’s been that number nine with real scoring ability.
“Now, he’s injured before the two biggest games of their season. These are the two games vital to qualifying for the Champions League and retaining that title.
“They’re going so well in both competitions, and to lose a player of his stature could be a catastrophe.”

Morelos, who is under contract until May 2023, has netted 19 goals in 42 games for Rangers this term.
The Ibrox club can draw level with Celtic atop the Scottish Premiership with a win on Sunday.
