All Man City players to wear No.42 as Antoine Semenyo follows club legend’s footsteps

Antoine Semenyo has joined an interesting set of names following his big-money move to Man City this January.

Semenyo bid farewell to Bournemouth on Friday, 9 January, before being announced as Pep Guardiola‘s latest signing ahead of the second half of the 2025-26 Premier League campaign.

Guardiola has been accused of being a “chequebook manager,” but City fans could not care less after beating several English giants to the Ghanaian’s signature in the January window.

Stefan Borson revealed to Football Insider that Semenyo could earn upwards of £200,000-a-week at the Etihad Stadium, which would add up to £10million over the span of his five-and-a-half-year contract.

There is no telling how high his ceiling could reach, but there is no doubt whose career he will want to recreate out of those who have worn the same number for City.

Yaya Toure

Possibly the most iconic of the players to don the No.42 shirt, Yaya Toure is widely seen as one of the club’s greatest-ever legends, going on to make over 300 appearances in blue.

He netted 79 goals and 47 assists in that time, before finally leaving on a free transfer to Olympiacos in 2018, playing alongside the likes of Kevin de Bruyne, David Silva, and Vincent Kompany.

Bradley Wright-Phillips

The half-brother of Shaun, Bradley Wright-Phillips, made just 32 first-team appearances for the Citizens between 2004 and 2006, scoring just one goal.

After graduating from the academy, he would eventually join Southampton, where he netted 22 goals in 48 appearances, before bouncing from club to club and ending up in the MLS.

Glenn Whelan

Despite a lengthy career in the Championship, most well-known for his time at Stoke City, where he made over 300 appearances, Glenn Whelan only ever played one game for the Citizens.

This came in a UEFA Cup qualification game back in 2003, as Man City beat The New Saints 2-0 away from home, before he joined Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer in the summer of 2004.

With 91 international caps to his name for the Republic of Ireland, Whelan had an incredible career at a decent level, and it all came from his time with the Citizens all those years ago.
