Allan McGregor’s pal issues verdict on Rangers star accepting mega-money offer

Alan Hutton has claimed Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor could stay at the club and begin his path into coaching.

The former Gers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 40-year-old will find it “easier” to make the transition if he remains at the Ibrox club.

According to the Scottish Sun (16 June), McGregor has been offered the chance to end his career in the United Arab Emirates after an unnamed club tabled a mega-money two-year contract.

Rangers

The shot-stopper is reportedly weighing up his options after the expiry of his Rangers contract at the end of May.

However, the former Hull City keeper has reportedly entered talks over a contract which would see him combine a coaching role with his playing duties.

When asked if a coaching role would be something McGregor would consider, he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge: “I think he would.

“If you asked me that a couple of years ago, I would have said definitely not.

“But the older he has got, the more you can see that pathway into coaching opening up.

“If Rangers are there to help him along the way with badges and so on, it’s always a little bit easier when you’re already in the building.

“You know everybody and you feel comfortable – so it’s something he’ll look at.

“I’ve always told him that he needs something to keep his mind active when he does retire, and that could be the route forward for him.”

McGregor played a key role during the 2021-22 season despite his advancing years.

The 42-cap Scotland international made 47 appearances across all competitions, keeping 17 clean sheets.
