Allan Saint-Maximin: Pundit issues ‘out for the season’ verdict after Newcastle update today

Eddie Howe should not risk Allan Saint-Maximin’s fitness ahead of Newcastle v Brentford.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider amid an update on the mercurial Toon winger.

During Friday’s press conference (25 February) Howe revealed he will make a late call on Saint-Maximin for Saturday’s game against Brentford.

He explained the winger has been “away getting intensive treatment” after missing last weekend’s draw against West Ham.

Kenny insists Saint-Maximin should not be risked as a further injury could rule him out for the rest of the season.

“I wouldn’t risk him if he isn’t 100%,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“It’s one of them where if he plays and breaks down he could be out for the season.

“No one wants that. Do you save him for the rest of the season? The issue for Howe is that every game is a cup final for Newcastle.

“You need to play your best players. For me, you need to look at the bigger picture and I think Howe will make the right decision.

“He could be on the bench and make an appearance if Newcastle need him to.

“But I wouldn’t even have him on the bench if he isn’t completely fit. It’s just not worth the risk.

“It would be terrible if he picked up a long-term injury.”

Saint-Maximin has scored five goals and provided three assists in 23 league outings this season.

Two of those goals have come in his last five games.
