‘It pains me to say this’ – McCoist delivers a message that Celtic fans will hate
Rangers legend Ally McCoist believes that Brendan Rodgers would have no problem in replacing Arsene Wenger at the Emirates if the top job did become available.
The Celtic manager has been touted as one of the names in line to take over from the Frenchman once the Gunners boss eventually departs, and although fans of the North Londoners are not in favour of his potential appointment, the ex-Gers ace thinks he would ‘absolutely’ be a good fit.
Speaking to Alan Brazil on the talkSPORT breakfast show, broadcast at 6am, McCoist responded to Brazil when the Scot asked whether the Northern Irishman could get the Arsenal hot seat and said: “Absolutely. Brendan is clearly doing a fantastic job up at Celtic.
“It pains me to say this but he took over from Ronny Deila, who was successful, but Brendan has come in and taken Celtic to a new level.
“This year they probably haven’t shown great consistency.”
Football Insider verdict:
While McCoist believes Rodgers could do the job, it’s an appointment that’s unlikely to go down well with the Arsenal faithful who have already voiced their displeasure at the potential link-up. The Hoops boss would need to make an instant impact in North London and failure would be jumped upon immediately, likely leading to disaster. Yes, he’s done fantastically well at Parkhead – albeit while Rangers have been in the doldrums – but the Gunners will be looking bigger and better, at a proven winner in a top-class league. Massimiliano Allegri is the man on the lips of Arsenal supporters and anything less will not be welcomed.
