Ally McCoist has claimed Rangers must have a centre-back lined up after it has been revealed that Clint Hill will be released this summer.
Hill confirmed he is leaving Rangers following the 2-1 win against Hearts on Saturday after failing to receive a new contract offer, and the Ibrox faithful were furious at their club’s decision to let him go.
The 38-year-old has since said he wants to play on for another season at least, and is available.
The experienced centre-back has become a mainstay of the Gers’ defence this season after signing a one-year deal last summer after being released by QPR and has made 31 league and cup appearances this term, scoring six goals.
McCoist stated that Hill was “terrific” against Hearts and even claimed he was the Man of the Match “by some difference”.
The former St. Johnstone and Sunderland star also believes that the fact Pedro Caixinha is allowing him to leave is a hint that the club have a signing lined up already.
“You have to look at the bigger picture, and the bigger picture must be surely they have got a centre-half lined up,” he told the Glasgow Evening Times.
“You are not going to tell him you don’t want him next season if you have not got preparations in place for another centre-half to come.
“The indication that they are releasing him would tell me, hopefully, that they have got somebody in place that will come.”
Rangers have been linked with a number of centre-backs over the last few weeks, one being Bruno Alves, who has claimed he would be open to a move to the UK.
Next up for Rangers is a Wednesday night clash with Aberdeen, which could be Hill’s final ever appearance at Ibrox.
In other Rangers news, this 22-year-old has claimed he wants to play for the Gers next year.
