Alongside Lucas Paqueta: West Ham close to ‘huge statement signing’ – pundit

It is a surprise that West Ham have not been busier in the transfer window this summer.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Hammers’ transfer business.

As quoted by The Independent (24 August), David Moyes has claimed West Ham “really need” to add a couple of top players before the transfer deadline – but claimed it has been “very difficult” to get deals over the line.

He confirmed a bid for 33-cap Brazil international Lucas Paqueta, 24, who has notched 21 goals and 14 assists in 80 games for Lyon.

Fabrizio Romano updated on Friday (26 August) to claim that West Ham are waiting for Paqueta to jet in for medical tests after coming to an agreement with both club and player.

Kenny is hoping the Irons can confirm some new signings before next week’s cut-off.

“Moyes is saying they need a few players, I think we all knew that,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Listen, West Ham are still a good team, they have just had a few poor results at the start of the season, it happens.

“I just thought we would have seen a bit more activity from them this summer, maybe a big statement signing. There could be a huge statement signing alongside Paqueta, I can see it happening.

“There was fresh investment last year and that hasn’t really seen the light of day yet, it has just been a bit of a surprise.

“I really do rate that West Ham team, the likes of Bowen and Antonio.

But they need a bit of help if they are to carry on fighting for those European places.

“Hopefully something changes before the window shuts.”
