Andre Onana hits back at Nemanja Matic ahead of Man United vs Lyon

Andre Onana has responded to Nemanja Matic’s claim that he is “one of the worst goalkeepers” in Manchester United’s history with a post on social media.

The pair have exchanged words ahead of Manchester United‘s trip to the Groupama Stadium to face Lyon in the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

Despite Ruben Amorim‘s side currently sat 13th in the Premier League, Onana boldly claimed that his side were “way better” than the French team.

However, former Manchester United player Matic shared his thoughts on the comments during Lyon’s press conference on Wednesday (9 April), in his pre-match press conference where he said: “If you’re one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history then you need to take care of what you are talking about.”

Matic says Onana is “one of the worst goalkeepers” in Manchester United’s history.

Onana replies to the former United player on social media

In a post via X on Wednesday (9 April), the 29-year-old shot stopper replied to Matic’s claim by saying: “I would never be disrespectful to another club.

“We know that tomorrow will be a difficult game against a strong opponent.

“We focus on preparing a performance to make our fans proud. At least I’ve lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some can’t say the same.”

Onana lifted the FA Cup last year and the Carabao Cup the season prior, while Matic went without silverware in his time at Old Trafford but does have both cups and a pair of Premier League titles to his name while at Chelsea.

Europa League the last chance to save Manchester United’s season

Football Insider Verdict

The arrival of Amorim and his philosophy which served him so well at Sporting Lisbon is yet to improve the situation at Manchester United.

Former boss Erik ten Hag departed with the club in 14th place in the Premier League, but won two trophies in as many years in Manchester.

It’s been the same story so far under the Portuguese coach as any success this season hinges on Amorim’s ability to get Manchester United over the line in Europe.

It appears that the pressure to perform will be on even more following the exchange between Onana and Matic.

The former Blues’ midfielder won five major trophies during his time in west London, including three Premier League titles, along with one FA and League Cup a piece.

When you apply the context to the situation, Onana‘s response may not have been as hitting as the goalkeeper first intended.
