Ange Postecoglou could accept new job offer amid Celtic icon’s claim – pundit
Noel Whelan has claimed it would be “very hard” for Ange Postecoglou to turn down a move from Celtic to the Premier League if a vacancy becomes available.
The former Leeds and Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 57-year-old will want to “test himself” in the “best league in the world”.
Postecoglou is one of the bookies’ favourites to land the Brighton vacancy after the departure of Graham Potter to Chelsea earlier this week (8 September).
Celtic legend Chris Sutton took to Twitter (7 September) to insist the Australian wouldn’t “downgrade” to a club of the Seagulls’ size as he is “building something special” at Parkhead.
He did acknowledge that Postecoglou would eventually depart the Hoops for a club in the Premier League.
The former Melbourne Victory boss led Celtic to league title glory last season – earning a place in this season’s Champions League group stage.
Whelan claimed Celtic are a “massive club” but admitted a Brighton move would indeed be a “step up”.
He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “He’ll find it difficult to leave Celtic right now.
“He’s got them back into the Champions League and enjoying success, but I think you can safely say that he’ll find it hard to turn it down.
“Going to the Premier League would be a step up. Celtic are a massive club – and he’s won trophies, assembled a fantastic team, brought in a great style of play.
“His style probably suits Brighton. It’s very hard to see him turning that opportunity down if it does come about.
“I’m sure he wants to test himself against the best, and it is the best league in the world.”
