Anthony Gordon ‘fighting’ to save his Newcastle United career after confirmed news – Agbonlahor

Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Anthony Gordon is facing a “real fight” for his Newcastle United career following the signing of Harvey Barnes.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 22-year-old must impress in his opportunities to avoid becoming a “cup player” for the Magpies.

Newcastle confirmed the arrival of Barnes on Sunday (23 July) – with the Magpies paying Leicester City a reported £39million for his services.

Gordon joined for a similar fee in the January window despite only racking up eight Premier League goals in his career so far.

The England Under-21 international made just four starts for Newcastle in the second half of the season amid 16 appearances in total, scoring once.

Barnes, who exclusively played on the left wing for Leicester last term, managed 13 goals and three assists in a career-best 2022-23 campaign.

Alexander Isak can also play on the left flank with Callum Wilson often chosen to lead the line ahead of the Swede.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think Barnes goes straight in ahead of Gordon.

“But Gordon is still young. They’ve got time to bring him in and out.

“Newcastle have got so many competitions to contend with now, and they’ll want to win a trophy soon.

“So Gordon will be playing Carabao Cup and FA Cup games now.

“Let’s not forget that Isak likes to play off the left as well, so Gordon has got a real fight on.

“He’s got to impress in the opportunities he gets to make sure he doesn’t become a cup player for Newcastle.

“He’ll want important game time – not just Carabao Cup games.”
